What are the Additional Code Requirements for Diesel Generator Day Tanks?

If you are in the market for a diesel generator day tank, it is important to know what the additional code requirements are. Many municipalities have specific regulations that must be followed when installing or using a diesel generator day tank. In this article, we will discuss the additional code requirements for diesel generators and provide some helpful tips on how to stay compliant with these regulations.

Additional Code Requirements for Diesel Generator Day Tanks

Diesel generator day tanks are required to meet a few additional code requirements beyond those for standard aboveground or underground storage tanks.

Day tanks are typically much smaller than traditional storage tanks, with a capacity of just 500 to 2000 gallons. They’re designed to be used in conjunction with a larger base tank and act as a holding tank for the diesel fuel needed to power the generator set for a short period – usually no more than 24 hours. The day tank is intended to be refilled regularly from the base tank so that it’s always full and ready to go in case of an emergency.

Why Is Additional Code Required?

There are several reasons why day tanks are subject to additional code requirements. First, because they’re typically located near the generator set, they need to be able to withstand the vibration and movement that comes with being close to a working engine. Second, because they need to be refilled frequently, day tanks are more likely than other types of tanks to experience overfilling and leaks. And finally, because they hold such a large volume of flammable liquid in such a small space, day tanks present a greater fire hazard than larger storage tanks.

  • Tanks are located near the generator set and withstand vibration and movement
  • Frequently refilled tanks don’t experience overfilling or leaks
  • Hold a large volume of flammable liquid in a small space

There are a few additional code requirements for diesel generator day tanks that you need to be aware of. These requirements are in addition to the general code requirements for fuel storage tanks.

1. The tank must be constructed of materials that are compatible with diesel fuel.

2. The tank must be equipped with a means of containing any leaks or spills that may occur.

3. The tank must be labeled with the proper warning labels.

4. The tank must have a venting system that is designed to prevent the build-up of vapors inside the tank.

5. The tank must be equipped with a fill pipe that is located at least 12 inches above the bottom of the tank.

6. The tank must have a drain plug that is located at the bottom of the tank.

7. The tank must be equipped with an overflow pipe that is located at least 12 inches above the top of the tank.

8. The tank must have a pressure relief valve that is set to relieve at 75% of the tank’s rated capacity.

9. The tank must have a liquid level gauge that is visible from the outside of the generator shed.

10. The day tank must be connected to the generator set using a fuel supply line that is sized according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Lastly, all-day tanks must be grounded by local codes.

In some regions, local codes may impose additional fuel tank requirements above and beyond the stated run duration. Some cities in Dallas/Fort Worth, for example, have introduced extra safety and environmental criteria for fuel tanks, such as extended tank venting, fuel spill containment at the fill port, on-site pressure testing, and high fuel level shut-off. These criteria (or similar ones) are being implemented in other parts of the United States as well. When unsure whether or not you need to contact a Fire Marshal, it is usually best to do so.

What are some of the benefits of having a diesel generator day tank?

There are many benefits to having a diesel generator day tank. For one, it can help to keep your equipment running smoothly and efficiently. Additionally, a day tank can also help to protect your investment by prolonging the life of your equipment. Finally, a day tank can also provide an extra measure of safety for you and your family in the event of an emergency.

  • Increased safety: Diesel generator day tanks are subject to additional code requirements that ensure the safety of both people and the environment. By following these guidelines, you can be sure that your diesel generator day tank is up to code and compliant with regulations.

  • Improved fuel quality: All piping connections to and from the diesel generator day tank must be made of materials that are compatible with the fuel. This is to prevent corrosion and degradation of the fuel quality.
  • Better performance: The diesel generator day tank must be equipped with a means of monitoring the level of fuel in the tank. This can be either a mechanical float gauge or an electronic sensor. By having this level of control over the fuel supply, you can be sure that your diesel generator will always have enough fuel to meet demand.
