Boiler – The primary function of a boiler is to provide heating, which they do by burning fossil fuels like natural gas or coal. Boilers usually have three stages for efficiency- high pressure (boiling) stage, medium pressure stage, and low pressure (condensing) stage. Chiller – A chiller is used to provide cooling, which they do by using a refrigerant that evaporates and condenses in order to absorb the heat from the building’s air. It then passes through coils of tubing where it changes back into a liquid form, releasing its heat outside so that cool air can be drawn inside for use on the cold winter days! A chiller uses about three times as much energy as a boiler does because it has more parts than boilers do- such as compressors, condensers, gas/oil furnaces or electric heating elements. The different things are cooled off with water while others need ice packs during very hot summer months. Chillers also have more leaks and breakdowns than boilers do.

In order to provide comfortable temperatures for the building all year round, one needs a way to cool down during hot summer months as well as keep them warm on cold winter days.
