HVAC System: Understanding How it Works
A typical HVAC system in your house includes a furnace, air conditioner, water heater and radiator. The refrigerant gas is circulated by the compressor through the evaporator coil where it cools down and becomes a liquid again. This liquid passes across tubes inside of an expansion valve that are connected to the other side of the coil under pressure. On this side, all but one tube is closed off while one pipe has its end open to the atmosphere. When warm air from outside enters into this space then condensation will form on these coils as well as on any metal pipes in contact with them due to their high temperature difference with cold surfaces such as walls or floors inside your home. These drops of condensed liquid turn back into vapor when they touch this cooler air and the pressure inside of the coils is maintained because warm air keeps entering into it.
The liquid then continues to flow through a set of smaller tubes that can be closed off one at a time, each with its own valve. Once all valves are closed, refrigerant will accumulate in front of these small pipes as well as on any metal pipes in contact with them due to their high temperature difference with cold surfaces such as walls or floors inside your home. When you need more heat, for instance when summer comes around again, you open up some tubes which release compressed gas from outside and start circulating it back across an evaporator coil where it cools down and becomes liquid once again. This now-liquid refrigerant passes across the expansion valve where it gets compressed and is then released to the outside of your home.
