Planning began in 1978 with members of the Junior League of Palo Alto, with the assistance of the San Jose Junior League. The City of San Jose promised funding for the Silicon Valley Technology Center in the 1980s, but progress was slow.

The first 20,000-square-foot (1,900 m2) temporary exhibition opened in 1990; the Garage, named after the HP Garage, was housed in San Jose ‘s former convention center. A brand-new 132,000 square-foot (12,300 m2) facility was inaugurated on 31 October 1998 called The Tech Museum of Innovation. In May 2019, the organization was renamed The Tech Interactive and announced a new partnership with Discovery Education.

Tech Interactive reflects its social context, capturing Silicon Valley ‘s technology celebration with a fascination with what the institution’s literature refers to as “gizmos and gadgets” produced by Valley companies. Early reviews, however, criticized The Tech for failing to provide a consistent direction or message. In 2018, an expansion of Tech Interactive by 63,000 square feet (5,900 m2) was proposed as part of a major high-rise office development at Museum Place.

Tech Interactive has a number of exhibits dealing with energy efficiency, customization, exploration and genetics.

Tech Interactive offers a new approach to viewing galleries from a wide variety of media. Most of these exhibits are interactive and allow the viewer to take part in a learning experience. Tech also has partnerships with local attractions, ranging from jazz festivals to the Global Art Festival.

The IMAX Dome Theater, opened in 1998 and updated since then, features mainstream films as well as educational films. It’s Northern California’s only domed IMAX Theater and can accommodate up to 280 people.

Social Robotics

The Tech has an interactive exhibition where people can design and build robots.

The Technical Studio

Tech created an open-to-public workshop space where new exhibits were built by the in-house prototypes.

The Virtual Tech

The Tech Virtual was launched in December 2007. On 4 June 2008, the first museum exhibits in the world were developed using this open source method, which opened in the museum’s own Virtual Test Zone gallery. The seven exhibits, all of which were produced under the Creative Commons license and prototyped in the virtual world of Second Life, became part of the Museum ‘s Art, Film, Music and Games exhibition. The Virtual Test Zone gallery itself is a prototype exhibition area that will consistently feature virtual-to-real-world exhibitions on specific themes resulting from the Tech Virtual programs.

Decoded Body Worlds

Tech Interactive opened a semi-permanent exhibition called Body Worlds Decoded in 2017. Sponsored by venture capitalist John Doerr and his wife Ann, the exhibition features plastinated human anatomical specimens complemented by augmented reality and a digital anatomical table. The exhibition is to be held for at least 10 years.
