Tracy is San Joaquin County, California, the second most populous city in the United States. The population at 2010 census was 82,922. Tracy’s roots relate to the building of Central Pacific Railway lines running from Sacramento via Stockton and to the San Francisco Bay Area in the mid-19th century. Tracy is a member of the Bay Area branch of the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland, CA Combined Statistical Area. A variety of small communities developed along those lines, including the one named after Lathrop J. Tracy, the founder of the railroad. Tracy, which was incorporated in 1911, grew rapidly and prospered as an agricultural district, even as railway operations began to decline in the 1950s. Tracy experienced a spurt of development starting in the 1980s when people moved to the city in search of cheaper alternatives to housing prices in the Bay Area, in addition to a more relaxed lifestyle. A steady growth period ensued, as many companies considered Tracy an suitable place for their distribution facilities.
Tracy is served by many bus services, locally Tracer operates four lines between major transit centers, shopping, education, suburban and downtown areas, operating as circulators. San Joaquin Regional Transit District (SMART) operates two local routes linking the area with other San Joaquin County areas and six commuter buses heading to Dublin / Pleasanton BART station and South Bay and Livermore job centres.
